ファティマ（ポルトガル）

ファティマは、ポルトガル中西部にある小さな町です。

その規模は人口およそ1万人ということですが、ここは20世紀初期以降、カトリック
教徒巡礼の地として名高いところです。

そのことは、「ファティマの聖母」「ファティマの奇跡」という言葉に代表され、
1917年に聖母が出現した土地ということで知られています。

ある日のこと、3人の子供たち（ルシア、フランシスコ、ジャシンダという）の前に、
突然聖母が現れました。

そして、毎月13日に同じ場所で会見するという聖母の残した言葉に従い、この3人は、
以後毎月、約束の丘で聖母に会うようになります。

そのことは多くの人たちが目撃され、広く人々に知られるようになりました。

カトリック教会も、後にこの話を公認したということです。
その、聖母が出現したという場所には聖堂が建てられ、「聖母教会」と名づけられました。

また、5月13日を聖母出現の日と定め、毎年多くの巡礼者が訪れるようになりました。

ファティマは、こうして聖なる地となったのです。

20世紀に入ってから巡礼の地になったファティマの、巡礼の地としての歴史は浅いですが、
この先の歴史に大きく名を刻んでいく、永久不滅の都市になっていくことでしょう。

Fatima is a small town located in west-central Portugal.

The population is about 10,000. It has been a famous place as the Catholic pilgrim since the early 20th century.

As typified by the words "Our Lady of Fatima" and "Miracle of Fatima", it is known as the place where the Virgin Mary appeared in 1917.

One day suddenly the Virgin Mary appeared in front of the three children (Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinda).

Following the message that she meets at the same place on the 13th of every month, which is left by the Virgin Mary, these three have seen the Virgin Mary on the appointed hill every month since then.

A lot of people saw it and it has become widely known.

The Catholic Church also authorized this story later.
The cathedral was built in the place where the Virgin Mary appeared, and it was named the Shrine of Our Lady.

Also, 13th May was decided as the day of a Marian apparition, and many pilgrims have visited there every year.

Thus, Fatima became a holy place.

The history of Fatima as a place for pilgrimage began in the beginning of the 20th century is not long, but it will become a permanently immortal city that carves its name significantly in the history.
