お祈りの仕方

十字を描いて神に祈ることは、神への愛、賛美など、実に様々な意味を含む
大切な行為で、皆さんもご存知かと思います。

この「十字を描く」という行動も、実は宗派によってやり方が少し違い、
また呼ばれ方も違います。

十字を描くという言葉は、ほかにも十字を切る、十字を画く（かく）という
言い方もされますが、特に言葉の差異はなく、宗派によって、どの言い方が
一般的なのかが違っているだけです。

ここでは「十字を描く」という言葉で説明していきましょう。

十字を描くときは、右手親指、人差し指、中指を全てくっつけた状態で、
上下を描いたあと、右胸、左胸の順番で描きます。

この時の、「右胸から左胸」という順番に関しては、最古のキリスト教では
そのような順番を遵守していて、一般的に何事も右手を使って右から、という
ことが常識化していたのですが、キリスト教の発展や宗派の枝分かれにより、
その順番があやふやになったのか、カトリックでは上、下、左胸、右胸の
順番が正しいとされています。

プロテスタントは、一般的には十字を描くという習慣がある宗派とない宗派が
あるようで、厳密な意味で「十字を描く」必要はないようです。

ですから、誰かが十字を描く様子を見かけたときはカトリックか東方正教会の
方だという可能性が高く、更に十字を描く順番を見てみると、カトリックか
東方正教会の信徒のどちらかがわかる可能性がある、ということです。

Actually, the ways of this practice of crossing oneself are actually slightly different depending on the sect and its names also vary.

The practice of making the sign of the cross has various expressions, such as crossing oneself, or making a cross, but their meanings are not different, and the general expressions are just different depending on the sect.
I will explain about it here, using the expression, making the sign of the cross.

When making the sign of the cross, use your right hand and hold the thumb and first two fingers together, and move it up and down and from the right chest to the left chest on your own body.

Regarding the order, from the right chest to the left chest, the oldest Christianity observes such an order, and it used to be generally common that everything should be done from the right side with the right hand.

However, due to the development of Christianity and the branched sects, the order became obscure, so that the order of up, down, left chest, and right chest is regarded as the correct form in Catholic.
In Protestant, it seems that generally there are sects that have the custom of making the sign of the cross and sects that do not have that custom, so it seems not necessary to make the sign of the cross in the strict sense.

Therefore, when you see someone making the sign of the cross, it is highly likely that the prayer is a follower of Catholic or Eastern Orthodox Church, and if you see the order of making the sign of the cross, you may see the prayer is a follower of either Catholic or Eastern Orthodox Church.
