キリスト教美術繁栄の理由

キリスト教と聞くと、必ず教会内の豪華な美術品を思い起こす人もいるでしょう。

では、何故キリスト教芸術はここまで人を魅了し、そして発展を遂げたのでしょうか？

実は初期のキリスト教では、宗教画や彫刻を必要としませんでした。

それは、人為的に造り出した絵画や像は偽である、という考え方があったからです。
偽の像に向かって祈りを捧げることは論外だというわけです。

しかしその後、事情が大きく変わっていきます。
きっかけは、ローマ帝国が国教として、キリスト教を定めたことです。

ローマ帝国の人々は、様々な言語を使いながら生活していて、伝道する側の人々は、
キリスト教の教義を彼らの言葉で細かく説明していくことに限界を感じるように
なりました。

それまでの伝道は、基本的に、口頭で行われていたのです。

そこで、もっと多くの人たちに、ひと目でキリストのことを知ってもらう必要性が
生まれてきました。

そのために、キリストやマリア像が描かれるようになったのです。

ですから、キリスト教芸術の元には、決して芸術としての美しさ、価値を求める以前に、
キリストの教えを伝えるための教材、という考え方がありました。

キリスト教初期の人々は、後に「キリスト教芸術」という総称でキリストの絵画などが
世界的に発展していくことを夢にも思わなかったのではないでしょうか？

However, the situation had changed dramatically afterwards when the Roman Empire established Christianity as a state religion.

People lived in the Roman Empire used various languages, so that evangelists became to feel a limit to explain Christian doctrines with their words in details.

Evangelism had been basically carried out orally until then.

Then it became nessesary to have more people know about Jesus Christ visually.

Therefore, images of Christ and the Virgin Maria have become drawn.

Christian arts were originally regarded as ??teaching materials to convey the teaching of Jesus Christ before its artistic beauty and value were required.

It is supposed that people in the early Christianity would have not dreamed of the development of Christian paintings worldwide as the generic term Christian art later.
